What changes does the digital turn bring for historiography, and do digital technologies really provide the means for realizing a radically egalitarian information utopia?
The presentation discusses these questions against the background of the VHH project, which has its starting point in the digital indexing of the footage taken by Allied cameramen during the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. It highlights the challenges and opportunities of introducing a comprehensive understanding of digitization, recontextualization, relational analysis, and linkage as a basis for researching and communicating the history of the images and their afterlife.
