What epistemological and methodological questions are raised by the advanced digitization and automated analysis of Soviet liberation footage stored at major archives in former Soviet Union republics?
The presentation focuses on the possible identification of Soviet archival films about Nazi war crimes by using software applications developed within the VHH project. Irina Tcherneva and Valérie Pozner address epistemological and methodological issues regarding the application of digital humanities to Soviet archival films, taking into account the history of cinema as well as the specificity of Soviet conservation logics and professional practices.
